What are we learning in Language Arts?
In third grade we learn district reading standards through whole group activities such as interactive reading, small group activities which include guided reading and book clubs as well as paired and individual reading. Students also write, talk and share about reading every day.
In writing class, we learn the process of writing personal narratives, information and persuasive writing as well as fairy tales. We really enjoy our publishing parties!
We use the "Words Their Way" researched based word study approach for spelling. Students are administered a spelling inventory designed to show students' knowledge of key spelling features that relate to different spelling stages. Based on an analysis of the students' spelling, small groups are formed and appropriate instruction is given to each student.
Third graders also learn upper and lowercase cursive letters and how to write words and sentences in cursive.
What are we learning in Math?
We use the Math Expressions from Houghton Mifflan Harcourt publishing company for our math curriculum. With this program, children are very involved in the learning process through activities, math talk, problem- solving and student leadership during activities. Students will start out learning multiplication and division concepts and facts. Other topics will include measurement, telling time, graphing, polygons, perimeter, area, fractions, multi-digit addition and subtraction and of course, lots of problem solving.
Within this program is a 10-15 min. a day interactive supplemental mathematics program, Every Day Counts Calendar Math that is designed to capitalize on daily discussions. The topics change per month but include place value, adding, subtracting, telling time, money, graphing, patterns and other important concepts.
Please continue to work on addition, subtraction and multiplication facts every day for quick recall.
